This course focuses on the relationship between art and politics, offering you insight and inspiration to create artistic projects with political impact. You will first gain an overview of the history of political art and key social themes that are prevalent in art today. In the second half of the course, you will learn strategies for political action from within the arts that you can carry forward into your artistic or curatorial practice.

Over 5 weeks, this course will cover:

  • the history and evolution of political art - including different practices and theories
  • the main political themes that have dominated art in recent years
  • the role of art in social movements and resistance efforts
  • alternative methods and strategies for politically organizing in the art world
  • a critical analysis of political activism in art - including the potentials, pitfalls and ethics

This interactive course includes numerous case studies of influential artworks, exhibitions, collectives and interventions, as well as a comprehensive reading list. By the end of the course, you will have the background knowledge and confidence to engage in public discourse and develop impactful projects at the intersection of art and politics.

The course is for artists, curators, producers and other art professionals. No specific knowledge is needed but some familiarity with both art and political movements will be helpful.

Session 1. Introduction to the program and course overview

  • Introduction to the program and course overview

This is a one-hour-only welcome session. The lecturer will introduce the program and participants will introduce themselves. No prior preparation is necessary.

Session 2. Political art in a historical context

In this session, you will learn about political art and its key concepts in a historical context. You will get familiarized with different art movements and practices that engage with politics.

We will discuss:

  • The birth of the artist-activist
  • The rise of counter-hegemonic narratives of the 20th Century (e.g. Dadaism, Actionism, second-wave feminist art, British Black Arts movement, among others)
  • Contemporary political art and its struggles
  • How art is affected by politics and, conversely, how art can shape politics

Session 3. Key political themes in the arts

In the third session, we will explore key political themes and struggles that have dominated the art field over the past decades. Drawing on case studies, you will gain an understanding of how artists and curators have addressed pressing issues and the impact of their work.

The major themes that we will address include:

  • Decolonialism
  • Feminism and gender politics
  • Community and care

Session 4. Politics from within the arts

This session is dedicated to art workers and institutional politics. We will focus on what we do instead of what we show. By analysing the complex structures that make up the art world, you will critically engage with the possibilities and limitations of political action from within the arts.

We will cover:

  • Artworkers and institutional politics
  • Working with the master's tools
  • Funding in the arts and the extent of our power
  • Strategies for resistance from within

Session 5. What could be: imagining alternatives

The last session will be rich with discussion about the potential for imagining alternatives to present-day art and politics. We will draw inspiration from artist-run and grassroots initiatives to consider alternative ways of producing art, working together and self-organizing.

Through case studies, we will explore:

  • Political action and the formation of new communities
  • Constructing local and global networks of care and resistance
  • Autonomy and interdependence in grassroot organizing

We will use Zoom for the live video conferences, please check Zoom's technical requirements here.

Live captioning will be available during the video conference.
