Duration
Aimed at people who want to work in museums or who are interested in creating exhibitions in collaboration with them, the course takes you through the basic elements that shape a museum and define the work taking place within its walls.
The course will first explore key theoretical concepts of contemporary Museology (what makes a museum what it is). Through historic and contemporary case studies, we will trace the development of museums, from early collections to the contemporary multi-faceted institutions that we are familiar with today.
We will then get familiar with various aspects of museum practice, including exhibition-planning methods and techniques, different working processes and the multiple roles that professionals fulfil for a museum to function. By giving an overview of its different departments, we will bring to light the dynamics and challenges of working in a museum.
In relation to curatorial practice, the course will discuss critical contemporary topics such as decolonization of collections and ethical sponsorship debates. The course concludes with a re-evaluation of the role of museums and what would be expected of such institutions in the future.
Overall, this course provides a broad academic and professional insight into all aspects of the museum, giving you the fundamentals to work within this ever-evolving field.
Week 1. Introduction
This is a one-hour-only welcome session. The lecturer will introduce the program and participants will introduce themselves. No prior preparation is necessary.
Week 2
During this first week, we will touch upon key theoretical texts that refer to the meaning of museums, how they are defined and how they were developed over the years to become the institutions that we are familiar with today.
Week 3
Starting with the International Council of Museums' (ICOM) definition of a museum, we will look into the administrative structures and the different departments that form a museum. We will examine the workings of each department and the role of curators in the broader museum institutional culture.
Week 4
Based on ICOM's Code of Ethics for museum practice, this session examines the different ethical debates that museum professionals in varied departments face in their everyday practice. Drawing on the case studies discussed in Week 2, we will focus on ICOM’s guidance and explore how this might be further developed to respond to current and anticipated conditions that affect the museum context.
Week 5
During this concluding session we will focus on public programming and the ways museums interact with local communities and international audiences, with the aim to envision the role of museums in the future.
Live captioning will be available during the video conference.
