This course focuses on the relationship between art and politics, offering you insight and inspiration to create artistic projects with political impact. You will first gain an overview of the history of political art and key social themes that are prevalent in art today. In the second half of the course, you will learn strategies for political action from within the arts that you can carry forward into your artistic or curatorial practice.

This interactive course includes numerous case studies of influential artworks, exhibitions, collectives and interventions, as well as a comprehensive reading list. By the end of the course, you will have the background knowledge and confidence to engage in public discourse and develop impactful projects at the intersection of art and politics.
The course is for artists, curators, producers and other art professionals. No specific knowledge is needed but some familiarity with both art and political movements will be helpful.

Session 1. Introduction to the program and course overview
In this first session, we will introduce ourselves and discuss our initial thoughts on the intersection of art and politics.
Session 2. Political art in a historical context
In this session, you will learn about political art and its key concepts in a historical context. You will get familiarized with different art movements and practices that engage with politics.

In the third session, we will explore key political themes and struggles that have dominated the art field over the past decades. Drawing on case studies, you will gain an understanding of how artists and curators have addressed pressing issues and the impact of their work.

Session 4. Politics from within the arts
This session is dedicated to art workers and institutional politics. We will focus on what we do instead of what we show. By analysing the complex structures that make up the art world, you will critically engage with the possibilities and limitations of political action from within the arts.

Session 5. What could be: imagining alternatives
The last session will be rich with discussion about the potential for imagining alternatives to present-day art and politics. We will draw inspiration from artist-run and grassroots initiatives to consider alternative ways of producing art, working together and self-organizing.
