Mastering the skill of writing winning grant proposals is crucial to bringing your artistic projects to life. Whether you're an artist, curator, or creative worker, this 2-day workshop will equip you with the essential skills required to write compelling grant applications and secure funding for your artistic and cultural endeavors.

Throughout the workshop, we will explore key strategies to make your grant application stand out. Discover how to communicate your artistic vision clearly and compellingly to potential funders. We will also delve into the art of integrating the conceptual, technical, and material aspects of your practice, creating a cohesive and impactful project proposal. Additionally, you’ll understand how to contextualize and visually present your work, ensuring that your production resonates with others. Learn to articulate the relevance and critical value of your projects, sparking curiosity and leaving a lasting impact on your audience.

Guided by Paz Ponce, an independent curator and culture worker who has received prestigious grants and fellowships for herself and collaborators, including the Recherchestipendium Bildende Kunst Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa (2022/23), the NPN-STEPPING OUT Joint Adventures grant (2021/2022), the Onassis AiR Tailor-made Fellowship (2022), and the Fonds Soziokultur (2022), you will gain valuable insights into honing your creative process and recognize the right opportunities that align with both your creative vision and working ethics.

Through examples and interactive Q&A sessions, you will have the opportunity to refine your own ideas for materializing projects. Over the two intensive workshop days, you will develop the skills needed to navigate the funding landscape with confidence and craft successful grant applications.

The Zoom sessions will be on Friday, February 16 and 23, from 3pm to 7pm Berlin time CET.

Session 1: Navigating the funding landscape

Friday, February 16 from 3pm to 7pm Berlin Time CEST

In the first session, we will explore how to formulate grant proposals for different categories, including:

A. Research grants

B. Residency & mobility grants

C. Work & production grants

D. Exhibition & distribution grants

By understanding the distinct frameworks and approaches associated with each type of funding, we will learn how to adapt our proposals accordingly. Sharing your concrete goals with the group will maximize the benefits of this workshop.

Session 2: Essential grant application materials

Friday, February 23 from 3pm to 7pm Berlin Time CEST

In the first part of the session, we will delve into the materials that are essential to a grant application: your portfolio, CV, and artist statement. They are valuable assets to strengthen your proposal and to showcase your work to the jury members. It's important to recognize that funding bodies and their calls for proposals provide an opportunity for you to establish connections with other professionals, apart from securing funding. Practicing this mindset can help to manage expectations regarding the outcome of applications, which can lead to creative blockages.

In the second part of the session, we will focus on the budget of your grant application, taking the following key points into account:

  • Your budget is political: we will discuss ethical considerations in setting fees for everyone involved in the project.

  • Your budget is site-specific: Learn how to create a checklist to adapt your idea to the specific operating environment.
