For this Node Talk and Q&A the feminist collective Tomorrow Girls Troop shares how they work as a collective and address gender inequality issues in East Asia by working with pop culture, magazines, Internet memes, and commercial advertising.
“As young feminists from diverse backgrounds, we represent students, mothers, part-time workers, the underemployed, and the unemployed reflecting on the sexism and racism we experience. Although we may miss out on opportunities as individuals, the mutual support of our collaborators allows us to accomplish impressive projects together.” Tomorrow Girls Troop
The Tomorrow Girls Troop is made up of about 50 anonymous members worldwide and is consistently growing. Founded in 2015, they work in the space between parody, critique, and suggestion. The group mixes activist strategies, physical actions and Internet-based projects that have included drawing up a petition to encourage Japan's most respected dictionary Kojien to adjust their definition of feminism, initiated an Empowerment March at Sophia University and operating pseudonymously like the U.S.-founded Guerilla Girls also do.
