In this 7-month program, we will work towards a future of curating that moves beyond normative and exclusionary curatorial practices to approaches that are committed to critical diversity, inclusivity and accessibility. Inclusive Curatorial Practices will not only explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, age and disability in curating, but also develop a self-reflexive approach that spans the conceptualisation of curatorial projects, behind-the-scenes working processes, their outcomes and audience experience.

The program will comprise a series of online courses, guest lectures by inspiring experts as well as workshops for group discussion and feedback. It will be coordinated by Kathy-Ann Tan, who will guide your development over the program’s 7 months.

The overall program is divided into four key modules: Queer & Feminist Curating, Decolonial Approaches, Inclusive Practices and Communication & Conflict Transformation:

  • In the first module Queer & Feminist Curating, we will get familiar with methods that disrupt heteronormative and patriarchal structures in the arts.
  • Decolonial Approaches will focus on decolonizing artistic and curatorial practices and how to address diversity in relation to our audiences and teams.
  • In the module Inclusive Practices, we will learn new approaches to public programming, how to provide services that are inclusive and equitable, and how to make projects accessible to disabled audiences.
  • The last module Communication & Conflict Transformation will delve into how to write texts that are understandable to different audiences. We will introduce conflict resolution techniques, communication frameworks and learn how to communicate public statements of apology.

This online program is for curators, cultural workers and artists who want to consciously shape their practice to be more accountable, self-reflexive and inclusive. By the end of the program you will produce your own awareness guide of best inclusive practices for your personal curatorial work, projects or space.
