Digital spaces have become increasingly important platforms for artistic and curatorial practice. Artists, curators, and cultural institutions are exploring new ways to create, present, and share art online. At the same time, museums are increasingly digitising their collections and developing virtual experiences to reach broader audiences and foster new forms of visitor engagement.

In this short course, you will learn how to approach the design of virtual exhibitions, explore the possibilities of different digital environments, and critically consider how these spaces shape visitor experiences.

Across three sessions, we will explore:

  • The key concepts, processes, and tools behind virtual exhibition design.
  • Virtual, augmented, and mixed reality and their possibilities for online exhibitions.
  • Critical and ethical questions around avatars, co-presence, privacy, monetization, and ownership.

This short course is the third module of the Curating the Digital Program: Exhibition-Making in the Age of VR, AR and New Technologies, a six-month online program for curators and art professionals interested in exploring the possibilities of curating in the digital age. This course may also be taken as a stand-alone offering.
